5 beauty myths we all fall for!
1. Shaving makes your hair grow thicker
Even though your hair may feel coarser after you shave, it isn’t. When your hair grows out from the follicle, it has a soft and fine tapered end. When you shave, you cut the thickest part of the hair, which makes it feel stubbly and thick (best to stick to waxing).
You can’t change the thickness of your hair!’
2. White marks on your nails is due to lack of calcium
Nooo! There are so many factors that can interfere with our nail growth. White marks on your nails can be caused by medication, underlying illnesses, damage to the nail plate.
There is no treatment for just white spots on their own. Those that have been caused by trauma will naturally grow out over time. However, if you have any concerns you should consult your doctor!
3. Plucking grey hair will make more grow
Ah, the old wives' tale that just won't die. When you tweeze a hair, you're only affecting the follicle that contained it - not the ones surrounding it. Sure, a grey hair might grow back to replace the one you just removed, but that's it.
4. Toothpaste will get rid of spots
Wrong! (not a good idea) Some toothpastes contain Zinc and do indeed have a drying, anti-inflammatory effect but other ingredients could irritate the skin and may even makes spots worse.
5. Juice cleanses rid your body of toxins
Many health-conscious people may be happy to know that they don't need to starve themselves on a juice cleanse to detoxify themselves. Your body detoxifies itself through the digestive tract, liver, lungs and kidneys.
Juice cleanses may contain less calories and fat than normal meals and make us lose weight, but they don't "detoxify" anything. The word ‘detox’ belongs in a hospital or drug-dependency unit.
If you mean ‘keep yourself as healthy as possible’ then by all means…
- keep hydrated – with water
- don’t smoke
- eat well
- exercise
- get enough sunshine or supplement with vitamin D
Leave the rest to your lungs, kidneys, skin and liver.
